Mini was so excited about celebrating her Adoption Day, the anniversary of the day when we went to court in Maryland. But how much does a 2 year old understand Adoption Day? I can tell you, she understands it quite well!
She understands it as a happy day in our family. We say “yay, we’re a family!” and “thank you, God, for making us a family!” and stuff like that.
Max initiated lots of love for his little sister. This day is a big deal to him, as well. He put in a dvd of home videos for all of us to watch. I can’t believe how much she’s grown and changed but it also amazes me how “big” she was even before she was 2 years old. Remember the salad video? We were dying.
When I had the balloon blown up at the store, I gave it to her with a big hug. Her smile was so sweet, I really wish I had my camera.
She proudly – and I mean loudly and proudly – told everyone she got a big balloon. The produce guy. The sixty year-old customer in a hurry to get home and watch his Redskins game. The butcher who called for a ladder to rescue the balloon from the ceiling. The cashier who oo’d and aww’d over it. She said, “It’s a pwincess bawoon!” and “it’s my Ajopjun Day!”
We’ve been practicing her adoption story for a while now when getting ready for bed. Not every night, but often enough that she has it almost memorized. I’m hoping to get it on video soon.
It goes something like this:
Brrrringg. (phone up to ear)
Hellooooo? (giggles)
Yes, this is Mommy. (giggle)
Daddy’s here. Max is here, too.
Is that Mini? Is Mini born?
Hurray! Let’s adopt her!
So we got on a big airplane (Zoooom)
And flew to Colorado
Opened the big hospital doors
And there was Mini. Cute little Mini.
Mommy held her in my arms.
Welcome to the family! Yay! We’re a family!
Forever and ever.
Anna was there. John was there…(and then we name each one of Anna’s sisters and parents who were in the hospital room celebrating Mini’s birth and waiting for our arrival).
Yay! Mini is born! (big hug)
Happy Adoption Day, Mini. God has blessed us in ways that we couldn’t even imagine. We prayed for your arrival for so long and trusted the Lord that He would bring you to us in His perfect timing. Thank you to your special birth family that gave so much for you. They truly love you with all their heart and we love them too.
Forever and ever.
