Yesterday was really fun and Max was excited about Adoption Day and going to Build-A-Bear Workshop (he says all the words which is pretty dang cute.) There’s a little somethin’ else that happened yesterday that made me pretty happy, too.
But you know, first thing in the morning, I was afraid the day wasn’t off to a great start. When I heard footsteps coming downstairs, I wished a sleepy Max a big ol’ Happy Adoption Day that didn’t get the response I was hoping for. He responded, “hmmm thanks” and nonchalantly shuffled his feet right to the couch and covered himself up with a blanket.
Turns out, he just needed to wake up and smell the excitement. I retreated to the kitchen to give him some time by himself and returned with a simple last-minute idea of a menu for breakfast. Pretending to be his waitress (with a very bad French accent — Mike says all my accents sound a lot like Chinese and I’m afraid he’s right about that) I asked him for his order. As I gave him his orange juice in his favorite Cars cup, he put an X next to his choice of Mommy’s Famous Cinnamon Rolls Right Out of the Pillsbury Can and he flashed me a huge grin. He was warming up to this kind of treatment.
(you’ll have to forgive the picture. The only thing I was bummed about Adoption Day was that I was going to take crappy photos with my psychotic camera…)
Then I told him to come in the kitchen, that there was something I made for him waiting at the kitchen table. He shot himself off the couch to investigate because he loves surprises. He found the “Awesome Kid” foam visor and put it on his head. He loved it!
(argh! this camera is going to annoy me all day but don’t you love a good homemade foam visor? I had to put this picture on the blog anyway!)
After breakfast we went to his last speech therapy session for the school year. Wearing the Awesome Kid hat, he brought along the photo book I told you about. The therapist read it out loud with him and showed it to a few teachers, which went over big with Max. The school’s occupational therapist saw it, too, and complimented me on the hands-on and fine motor stuff we did. (If anyone would like to know what we did specifically, let me know and I’ll write about it.)
I was so happy to see how proud Max was of himself and us as a family. You know, he’s such a confident kid but his little ego is so fragile. He knows he struggles with some things and there are days when it gets the better of him, even at this young age. Yesterday he just seemed really glad about who he was. Can a mom ask for anything better than that? What a great feeling.
Okay, the rest of the afternoon was just a regular day at home – peanut butter and honey sandwiches for lunch, some bug exploring and some water play (meaning a bucket, a paintbrush, and a cheap water gun) in the afternoon during Mini’s nap. I answered the question, “how many more hours until we go to Build-A-Bear Workshop?” more times than I could count. Mike promised Max that he would be home at 5 pm and he walked in the door at 5:00 on the dot. What a great dad!
Then the sky began to darken and we started to hear thunder and Max began to worry that Build-A-Bear Workshop would be canceled, but we assured him that nothing was going to stop our Adoption Day plans. But Mike did ask Max if we could make one stop before Build-A-Bear Workshop (I’m tired of typing that) if that was alright with him.
Where did we go? To Best Buy, that’s where! Mike asked me if I knew what camera I wanted to buy and I told him I had decided on the Canon Powershot SD870 IS (I didn’t really tell him the model number. Wouldn’t that seem a little strange?) He asked if I could just get it in a hurry and even though I don’t do ANYTHING in a hurry, in 10 minutes flat and in pouring down rain, I ran inside and purchased a new camera for myself. Then I ran back to the car, switched out my current charged battery and memory card, and off we went.
That was fun!
Settle down, Anna. It’s only a camera.
Is the post long enough for you? I still have so much to say. But I will try to do it in a hurry (since that seems to be the theme for the night from this point on.)
We got to BABW.
Max took five seconds to decide on a koala. He took three seconds to stuff it, two point five to kiss the heart that goes in it, and another second to wash his fur. (oh, by the way, Max was insistent that the koala is a boy.)
And a milisecond to decide on the outfit. He was in too much of a hurry to even carry the poor thing upright.
He chose the scuba outfit but then changed his mind just as fast about it and went with Spider-man.
You know, because it’s a family thing.
On the way home I read the birth certificate to Max and he sweetly asked me if he just adopted his koala on Adoption Day. Well, yes he did. How about that?

Before going home we did slow down enough to eat fast food at the food court.
What a GREAT day!

You have a beautiful family! Happy Adoption Day to you all. I just happened to stop by here tonight and was so touched by the first page on your blog. When I got to the bottom with the pix of what Mini’s birth mom sent to you, I immediately knew what the 3 tiles meant. I could hardly read for the tears, tho! Lovely story, I’m sure I will be back to read some more:)
He is so adorable, what a fun day. Have fun with your new camera.
I just love that kid! I hardly know him (in person ) but he is so joyful and fun!!!

What a fabulous day! What a wonderful post.
It sounds like a really special day! And Mike’s right: all your accents sound Chinese and all your songs sound like Happy Birthday!
But that’s what we all love about you!
Sounds like a wonderful day!!
And congrats on the camera – Yay! Yay!
That does sound like a great day… what a great mom to make a little boy smile that much!

Isn’t Adoption day such a special day??? You guys are so lucky to have each other…and the expression on your face about the camera…priceless!
I just love you, Anna. I’m laughing and crying over your adoption day!
I found your blog on Beth’s folding laundry blog. I read occasionally and am always so touched when I do. Today’s entry has been my favorite so far. What a wonderful mother you are! What a beautiful family you have!
OK, so I have spent the morning crying catching up with your family. Man, girl, I am glad I haven’t showered yet cause my face is puffy now.
Love this adoption day! What a great idea and special way to celebrate such an occasion.
he is a cute guy!
What a fabulous day for a fabulous boy who is part of a fabulous family! And a fabulous koala too.
Oh, and yea! for your new camera. And picking it out yourself in a timely fashion.
I just love reading about your adventures! So happy for you about the camera (Cute pic of your joy, my daughter-in-law, Kirsten, likes to take self-portraits like that one and it reminded me of her,) and Mike deserves a special dinner for being so thoughtful! He knew you were stressing over that psychotic camera and how awful the pictures would look on Max’s special day. Now you have some really cute memories of this special day. Thanks for sharing your family with us, it is always a blessing.
Love you!
